A classical Lutheran education at Our Savior Lutheran School is formative and designed to incline the student from his earliest days toward that which is true, good, and beautiful. We accomplish this through the teaching of the liberal arts and sciences, guided by the great literature, art, music, mathematics, and ideas of Western civilization, while insisting upon the centrality of Holy Scriptures and the teaching of the Lutheran Confessions.

The Word of God is a constant presence in our school. Prayer, worship, and the proclamation of the Gospel frames our day as a school community and shapes all classroom instruction and discussion. Students engage in daily all-school worship, Scripture and catechetical recitations, and Lutheran hymnody.

We also emphasize training in virtue. We teach students to use their knowledge well and wisely. We aim to build the skills of a true scholar: from academic virtues such as intellectual honesty and diligence to engaging in close reading and careful discussion. We also work closely with parents to shape the heart and habits of a child. By emphasizing and practices the habits we value as a school - love, truth, honor, fortitude, and temperance - students are constantly engaged in practicing these virtues, recognizing and valuing them in others, and seeking to embody them more and more.

Key elements of a classical education include:

  • Recitation and repetition during early stages and during introductory study of any content area

  • Diligent study and analytical thought as the children mature

  • Cultivation of eloquence, beauty, and persuasion in the student’s writing and speaking

  • Socratic questioning for the pursuit of truth

  • The reading and analysis of good literature

  • The ancient languages and writings

  • The Great Books of Western civilization

  • The seven liberal arts [grammar, logic, rhetoric, mathematics, music, geometry, astronomy]

  • The formation of a well-educated, virtuous human being who lives his life in noble service to others
